Organisms often respond to environmental changes by producing alternative phenotypes. Epigenetic processes such as DNA methylation may contribute to environmentally induced phenotypic variation by modifying gene expression. Changes in DNA methylation, unlike DNA mutations, can be influenced by the environment; they are stable at the time scale of an individual and present different levels of heritability. These characteristics make DNA methylation a potentially important molecular process to respond to environmental change. The aim of this review is to present the implications of DNA methylation on phenotypic variations driven by environmental changes. More specifically, we explore epigenetic concepts concerning phenotypic change in response to the environment and heritability of DNA methylation, namely the Baldwin effect and genetic accommodation. Before addressing this point, we report major differences in DNA methylation across taxa and the role of this modification in producing and maintaining environmentally induced phenotypic variation. We also present the different methods allowing the detection of methylation polymorphism. We believe this review will be helpful to molecular ecologists, in that it highlights the importance of epigenetic processes in ecological and evolutionary studies.  相似文献

Summary

After fertilization of sea urchin eggs, there is a rapid increase in cellular levels of NADPH, a metabolite utilized in a variety of biosynthetic reactions during early development. Recent studies have shown that a dramatic increase in the activity of the pentose phosphate shunt occurs in vivo shortly after fertilization, consistent with the hypothesis mat this metabolic pathway is a major supplier of NADPH in sea urchin zygotes. One mechanism that may account, in part, for this increase in pentose shunt activity is the dissociation of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the first enzyme of the shunt, from cell structural elements. In vitro, G6PDH is associated with the insoluble matrix obtained from homogenates of unfertilized eggs, and in this state, the enzyme is inhibited. Within minutes of fertilization, G6PDH is released as an active, soluble enzyme. A similar solubilization and activation of G6PDH occurs after fertilization of eggs of other marine invertebrates and in mammalian cells in culture stimulated by growth factors. The occurrence of this phenomenon in such diverse cell types, in response to different stimuli, suggests that the redistribution of G6PDH between insoluble and soluble locations may be involved in the regulation of the pentose phosphate shunt during cell activation in general.  相似文献

The proboscidean fauna of the middle Miocene of Thailand consists of five taxa, including four elephantoids and one deinothere. The Thai association is dominated by the genera Stegolophodon and Gomphotherium. Stegolophodon is represented by S. nasaiensis and S. praelatidens. The latter species, considered invalid and possibly conspecific with S. latidens, is re‐erected. Its phylogenetic relationships are discussed. The Thai Gomphotherium matches with G. browni from the middle Miocene of Indo‐Pakistan. However, the open nomenclature is employed for the Thai material because it differs from G. browni in terms of curvature of the upper tusk. Intraspecific molar size variation observed in G. cf. browni and Stegolophodon praelatidens is attributed to sexual dimorphism. The Thai proboscidean asssemblage is mainly endemic compared with other contemporaneous Asian faunas although the recognition of Gomphotherium cf. browni denotes faunal affinities with Pakistan. Abstract: Two new primitive macroscelideans, Eotmantsoius perseverans gen. et sp. nov. and Nementchatherium rathbuni sp. nov. from the late Middle or Late Eocene locality of Dur At‐Talah, Libya, are described. Eotmantsoius is known from a single tooth and is characterized by low crown height, isolated conules, and lack of a preprotocrista and prehypocrista. Based on these characters, it appears to be more plesiomorphic than Chambius (late Early Eocene, Chambi, Tunisia), which was, to date, universally accepted as the oldest and most basal macroscelidean. Eotmantsoius appears, however, somewhat derived in having an entostyle, a pericone, a shorter mesial cingulum and larger intercusp valleys. The phylogenetic position of Eotmantsoius is unclear. The second new species, N. rathbuni, allows a reassessment of Nementchatherium. We suggest that it is the most derived of the herodotiines in having long preprotocrista and prehypocrista, reduced M2/m2, a robust entostyle twinned with the hypocone on M1 and the posterior aspect of the root of the maxillary jugal process placed along the length of M2. Nementchatherium rathbuni appears more derived than N. senarhense, from the Eocene locality of Bir El Ater, Algeria, in having smaller m2‐3 with no paraconid, a smaller hypoconulid on m2 and a more reduced talonid on m3 (with smaller hypoconid and entoconid). Nementchatherium rathbuni also has, distal to the m3, a coronoid canal. This character has commonly been proposed as a synapomorphy for paenungulates (e.g. proboscideans, sirenians and hyracoids); we investigate the possibility that it unites macroscelideans and paenungulates, as the superordinal clade Afrotheria suggests. Comparisons reveal that a coronoid canal also occurs in several nonafrotherian orders (lagomorphs, xenarthrans, artiodactyls and perissodactyls), suggesting that is not an exclusive synapomorphy for paenungulates plus macroscelideans. Moreover, the homology of the character within paenungulates is doubtful.  相似文献

The relative importance of fixed N2, cotyledonary N, and nitratefor growth of seedlings of soybean cv. Bragg and two of itsnitrate tolerant supernodulating (nts) mutants (intermediatents 1116 and extreme nts1007) was investigated during symbioticdevelopment in the presence of nitrate (3.0 mol m–3) using15N techniques. Newly-fixed N2 and nitrate were both major sourcesof N for nodule development and nitrate principally supportedearly shoot and root growth in Bragg. In the nts mutants, however,all plant parts and nodules in particular, relied more on Nstored in the cotyledons. This resulted in later nodule maturityand a period of prolonged N-starvation for the seedlings ofthe extreme supernodulator, and could be responsible for theirsubsequently lowered biomass accumulation compared to the parentcultivar. The study of species boundaries in areas of sympatry provides important insight into speciation processes. We investigated whether (i) two sympatric holothurians, Holothuria scabra and H. s. var. versicolor constituted species, and (ii) specimens of intermediate phenotype hybrids. Results from allozyme and 16S mtDNA sequence analyses indicated these two sea cucumbers to be distinct but young biological and phylogenetic species. Several private allozyme alleles existed and a Bayesian analysis grouped varieties into separate clusters. MtDNA sequences hardly varied within each taxon, and nine single bp changes were diagnostic between these two taxa. Allozyme allele frequencies in individuals of intermediate phenotype were intermediate to those of H. scabra and H. s.  var.  versicolor , most private alleles were present and heterozygote frequencies were higher than in either species. Ancestry coefficients modelled for these individuals were close to 0.5, indicating that the two taxa contributed equally to their genome. MtDNA sequences were identical to those of either species. We conclude that individuals of intermediate phenotype represent F1 hybrids. The presence of hybrids demonstrates that the opportunity for introgression exists, but is not realized, as backcrossing and introgression were not supported by the data.
